Ex-call center scammer arrested in Thailand after abuse claims

The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) has arrested a 20-year-old woman, Pannarat, an ex-member of a call center gang that scammed a retired teacher out of over one million baht.

On October 11, 2024, under the guidance of Police General Chiraphap Phurideth, CIB officers apprehended Pannarat based on a warrant issued on August 28, 2024. She faces multiple charges including theft and using someone else’s electronic card without permission.

The arrest took place in front of a dormitory in Lat Phrao, Bangkok. The case dates back to January 23, 2024, when the victim was tricked by someone posing as a pension fund officer who convinced them to install a fraudulent app, resulting in unauthorized transfers from their bank account to the suspect’s account.

Upon realizing the theft, the victim reported the crime, leading to the investigation that tracked down Pannarat at a Lat Phrao dormitory. The suspect admitted to her crimes during initial questioning, explaining she had sold her bank account to a call center gang and later traveled to work with them under false pretenses of good pay and conditions.

However, upon arriving, she found herself subjected to severe control, confinement, and abuse, including physical beatings and electric shocks. Pannarat eventually managed to escape back to Thailand, where she was later apprehended.
