The Prime Minister and the Cabinet will fly to Chiang Rai tomorrow to set up a systematic national disaster response and prevention plan. If successful, it could establish a model known as the “Mae Sai Model.”
On September 26, 2024, Jirayu Huangsap, an advisor to the Prime Minister, reported that Ms. Paethongtharn Shinawatra, the Prime Minister, received updates from Deputy Prime Minister Poomtham Wechayachai regarding disaster relief operations in northern areas. The meeting aims to address the floods and landslides affecting multiple provinces, including Chiang Rai and Nong Khai, urging expedited financial assistance to victims.
The Prime Minister highlighted the unprecedented scale of mudslides affecting urban areas and stressed the need for comprehensive disaster management frameworks to handle future incidents. If a successful strategy is developed, it will serve as a prototype for future responses nationwide.
“We have never faced such severe mudslides entering the city before. We need to create a structured response plan for natural disasters across the country to ensure readiness in all provinces. If we can finalize effective preventive measures, we will establish the ‘Mae Sai Model’ as a best practice,” the Prime Minister stated.
Jirayu mentioned the importance of gathering input from local authorities, private sectors, and the affected communities to formulate effective disaster prevention policies. Tomorrow, the Prime Minister will visit Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai to oversee assistance efforts and collaborate with local leaders to outline strategic plans for disaster management.
“In October, as we approach the transition to cooler weather, we must remain vigilant, as rainfall is expected to persist in various parts of Thailand. The disaster response center (SOP) and all government bodies must closely monitor the situation until further notice,” Jirayu added.
