Man on drugs hears voices, escapes police by praying on roof

A 48-year-old man, suffering from drug-induced hallucinations, climbed onto the roof of his house in Udon Thani, fearing for his life. He was reported as being disruptive and barricaded inside his home on October 2, 2024. Upon police arrival, the man, identified as Mr. Phakawat (surname withheld), refused to open the door despite officers urging him to do so.

Witnesses indicated that Mr. Phakawat climbed out of a bedroom window and walked around on the roof, ignoring attempts by officers to coax him down. At one point, he sat down, prayed for help, and recited protective chants until he eventually agreed to come down.

When questioned, he admitted to taking one methamphetamine pill earlier, which he was given by a friend. He expressed that voices in his head were telling him he was in danger and that he needed to escape to the roof. The chant he recited is known for enhancing protection from threats.

Ultimately, when police attempted to take him to the hospital for treatment, he resisted, claiming he was innocent and did not want to go. Officers had to restrain him and put him in handcuffs before successfully transporting him to the hospital.
