Mother Ngat Dam likely to overflow, threatening Chiang Mai regions

As of now, there are only 54 centimeters left before the Mae Ngat Dam will overflow its emergency spillway, predicted to occur around 1 AM tonight. It’s expected that the water will reach Chiang Mai city by approximately 5 PM tomorrow, with no water release confirmed yet.

On September 25, 2024, Chaloemkiat Inthakanok, director of the Mae Faek-Mae Ngat project, stated that the current water inflow to the dam is about 6 centimeters per hour. The dam is working to retain as much water as possible to minimize damage to Chiang Mai, which is an economic area.

When the emergency spillway overflows, three districts—Intha Khil, Cho Lae, and Ban Pao—will be affected. The water level in the Ping River is expected to rise by 20-50 centimeters. By that time, the water level at P.75 in Ban Cho Lae will have decreased, and the overflow from the emergency spillway will likely reach P.1 Nawarat Bridge in Chiang Mai city by around 5 PM tomorrow.

The Mae Faek-Mae Ngat maintenance project has established a 24-hour water situation monitoring center to prepare for any scenarios.
