Nearly 300 illegal workers arrested at Ayutthaya construction camp

Authorities in Ayutthaya, Thailand, apprehended nearly 300 undocumented Myanmar workers at a construction camp on September 24, 2024. Governor Niwat Rungsakorn ordered a security detail to inspect a worker camp in Nong Nam Som, which primarily hires laborers for a Chinese-owned construction company in the Rojana Industrial Park.

During the raid, the police found 212 men and 52 women without proper immigration documentation. All individuals were detained, and their details were recorded before being transported to the Uthai District office for legal processing. They will be repatriated after legal procedures are completed.

A detained Myanmar worker stated that these workers had illegally entered Thailand, paying around 20,000 baht each for the journey from Mae Sot, Tak province. They typically work construction jobs for a daily wage of 500 baht, while skilled workers earn around 600 baht. The ongoing conflict in Myanmar has prompted many to seek employment abroad.

This is the second time this construction camp has been raided; it was previously targeted by authorities last year.
