The Deputy Governor of Nonthaburi has urgently warned 30 communities at risk of flooding due to the Chao Phraya Dam’s decision to increase water discharge starting September 28, 2024. This announcement was made following continued heavy rainfall in the upper regions which has raised water levels upstream.
On September 26, 2024, Deputy Governor Apichai Aramsri communicated the urgency of the situation to relevant agencies due to the forecasted increase in water flow, projecting rates of 2,000-2,100 cubic meters per second over the next week at the measurement station in Nakhon Sawan. Current release from the dam is at 1,600 cubic meters per second, and levels may rise by an additional 1.00-1.50 meters if inflows worsen.
In preparation for potential flood impacts, the provincial disaster prevention authorities advised residents living along the Chao Phraya River and its tributaries, particularly in areas outside of flood defenses, to remain vigilant. Current water flow is measured at 1,286 cubic meters per second in Ayutthaya, and individuals are urged to monitor updates and report emergencies 24/7.
The authorities have identified 30 vulnerable communities along the riverbanks likely to be affected by rising water levels. These communities are at risk of overflowing from the banks, and detailed information has been provided regarding their locations.
