Severe flooding has struck several districts in Phayao as continuous rain has caused the water levels in “Kwan Phayao” to overflow, inundating homes, agricultural lands, and roads.
On September 24, 2024, reporters noted that heavy rainfall was still ongoing, leading to flash floods in local communities of tambons Tom, Tam, Thajamphi, Maesai, Matam, Thawalong, and Maeka in the Mueang Phayao district. The water has also inundated areas in the Dok Khamtai district, both within and outside the municipal area, affecting nearby villages. Additionally, many villages in the Chiang Muan district were affected by swelling waterways that flooded houses, roads, temples, and fields over a wide area.
The water level in Kwan Phayao has risen rapidly; it reached 392.59 meters with 57.855 million cubic meters of water, surpassing its storage capacity and resulting in flooding in residential areas, agricultural lands, and major roads in Mueang Phayao. The local irrigation department has been releasing water through drainage gates into the Ing River, causing a second wave of flooding in communities, including Ban Ma Tam Mueang Chum and Ban Fang Min in the Dok Khamtai district.
