Police await results from gold shop investigation of Ma Tak

The Commander of the Consumer Protection Police Bureau (PCPB), Pol. Lt. Gen. Witthaya Sriprasert, announced that they are awaiting results from the Consumer Protection Board (CPB) regarding the controversial gold sold by “Ma Tak,” a popular online gold seller on TikTok. Complaints have emerged after customers attempted to resell gold purchased from Ma Tak, only to find that local gold shops refused to buy it due to lack of quality marks and branding.

During a press conference on September 25, 2024, Pol. Lt. Gen. Witthaya explained that the PCPB is coordinating with the CPB to examine the gold’s legitimacy as part of an ongoing investigation. He noted that claims made during live streams about the gold being “99.99% pure” could potentially violate multiple laws, including fraud, selling unqualified products, and misleading advertisements under the Consumer Protection Act, as well as the Computer Fraud Act related to false information.

While no formal complaints had been received by the PCPB at the time of the statement, Pol. Lt. Gen. Witthaya indicated that a group of affected consumers planned to file complaints on September 26 at 10:00 AM. He instructed police personnel to be ready for the complaint process. He also advised consumers to purchase gold only from trustworthy brick-and-mortar stores with clear pricing and location, and to exercise caution when buying from online sellers.
