Residents warned to prepare for floods in Chiang Mai and Sukhothai

A flood warning is in effect for Chiang Mai, where a red flag indicating a high-risk level has been raised, and Sukhothai, where water has overflowed the banks of the Yom River beneath the Siripanya Rat Bridge.

As of September 24, the water situation in several northern provinces remains concerning, particularly Chiang Mai, Phrae, and Sukhothai, prompting officials to alert residents to prepare for potential flooding.

In Chiang Mai, residents living near the Ping River have been filling sandbags provided by the municipality to protect their homes from rising water levels.

The irrigation department has issued a forecast indicating that water levels at P67 Station in San Sai district are expected to rise, reaching a peak of approximately 4.5 meters at P1 Station, Navarat Bridge, around 3:00-5:00 AM on September 25, 2023.

Past floods have been severe; in 2022, levels reached 4.65 meters. Current monitoring shows levels at 3.81 meters as of 6:00 PM on September 24, 2023. Residents are urged to stay vigilant as more rainfall could occur.

Meanwhile, in Phrae, locals have begun monitoring water levels at the Yom River and are advising neighbors in real-time about flood risks. Levels recorded at 8.70 meters have begun to inundate homes, prompting residents to relocate their belongings and seek shelter in higher areas.

In Sukhothai, massive water flow has breached walls along the Yom River, flooding areas rapidly for the third time. The strong current has washed away sections of local roads, leading authorities to close them permanently, forcing residents to use alternative routes.
