Thailand enhances PISA evaluation in 2025 with demo schools

Ms. Supamas Isarapakdee, the Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, presented a policy aimed at enhancing the competencies and knowledge of learners in accordance with the international PISA assessment standards to improve Thailand’s PISA scores. The ministry has identified three key policies: 1. Development of essential skills such as analytical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and lifelong learning; 2. Improvement of teaching processes with a student-centered approach utilizing information and communication technology and updating teacher training; and 3. Building collaboration with all sectors including parents, communities, and the private sector.

“Although enhancing the competencies and knowledge of learners according to the PISA framework is challenging, I believe that with the cooperation of all sectors, we can significantly improve the educational quality in Thailand to an international level,” said the minister.

Professor Dr. Supachai Pathumnakool, head of the working group tasked with improving PISA scores, noted that the ministry is responsible for elevating PISA results in two main areas: 1. The ministry oversees demonstration schools where PISA assessments will take place; 2. The ministry is responsible for education faculties that train teachers to enhance student readiness for the 2025 assessments. Historically, students from demonstration schools tend to have higher average scores than others, although some schools have underperformed due to various factors. Therefore, collaboration between universities and schools is essential to help elevate scores of underperforming institutions, while Rajabhat universities will assist local schools in this endeavor.
