In Udon Thani province, officials convened a meeting to monitor water conditions and prepare for heavy rains, as the Huai Luang reservoir approaches maximum capacity and landslides have closed roads.
On September 24, at 9 AM, Udon Thani’s Deputy Governor Nattapong Kamwongpin led a meeting with relevant agencies to discuss water management amid ongoing heavy rainfall, prompting the reservoir to release more water as levels threaten to spill over.
Weather reports indicate that heavy rainfall has been caused by two recent storms, with cumulative rainfall exceeding that of 2011. The highest recorded was in Kud Jab on September 21, with 164 mm, and 175 mm on September 23.
The Udon Thani irrigation chief noted that the heavy rains are filling small reservoirs, such as the Kud Ling Ngaw reservoir, which has reached full capacity, causing significant overflow, while others are maintaining normal outflow levels.
The Huai Luang reservoir, with a maximum capacity of 135.5 million cubic meters, had to adjust its water release rates in response to inflows, which peaked at 680,000 cubic meters per hour. As of now, it is at 96.39% capacity, with expectations to reach full capacity soon due to continuous inflows.
The deputy governor also emphasized the need to assist residents in affected areas immediately and to prepare for the possibility of severe flooding, particularly in areas previously inundated last year.
Continuous heavy rains are also causing landslides, with large rocks obstructing roads between villages in the Nayung district, requiring urgent cleanup efforts. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.
