Wat Sawang Nam Sai monk explains “Boss Paul” donation issue

At Wat Sawaing Nam Sai in Khon Kaen, a monk addressed accusations circulating on social media about “Boss Paul” allegedly transferring significant sums of money for donations to a personal account. He clarified that he has no involvement in any legal case and that the total donations each year do not reach a million baht.

The controversy arose when a Facebook post shared a bank slip showing Boss Paul transferring money to a monk’s personal account, suggesting that he had donated over 12 million baht in a few years, frequently transferring sums between 200,000 and 600,000 baht. This raised questions about why the funds were not sent directly to the temple’s account.

On October 20, 2024, a reporter visited Wat Sawaing Nam Sai and spoke with Phra Maha Udon Boonchoo-lah, the monk in question, who said he usually stays at a temple in Bangkok but comes to this temple annually to care for his elderly mother. He clarified that he uses contributions to improve and maintain the temple, not for personal use.

Phra Maha Udon stated he met Boss Paul approximately ten years ago when Boss Paul began doing charity work at the temple. He explained that Boss Paul transfers funds to his personal account for convenience, as others do the same, which are then used for temple upkeep and charitable activities.

The monk insisted that the total donations from Boss Paul do not add up to a million baht per year, particularly noting that most contributions were made during the COVID-19 pandemic. The funds are used for temple activities and to maintain expenses.

Phra Maha Udon mentioned that he is unaware of Boss Paul’s business dealings and does not inquire about the sources of donations due to ethical considerations. He also noted that during their first meeting, Boss Paul was not wealthy and has only recently become more prominent within the community.

The monk views the controversy as a misunderstanding but emphasizes that he has no involvement with any legal matters concerning Boss Paul.
