A 55-year-old man from Chai Nat Province died after inhaling toxic gas while repairing a water pump at a deep well in a rice field. His wife attempted to get help but was too late.
On the morning of September 24, 2024, local police received a report of a man having difficulty breathing after descending into a 12-meter deep well to repair a pump that was not functioning properly. Authorities quickly arrived at the scene to assist, including medical personnel and rescue volunteers.
Upon reaching the site, rescuers found the victim at the bottom of the well. They struggled to retrieve him due to a lack of breathable air and the confined space, using oxygen tanks and ropes. It took more than an hour to successfully recover the body.
The deceased, identified as Mr. Pichai Lak Khamjiamkasem, was reportedly working alongside his 47-year-old wife, Mrs. Chayanee Khamjiamkasem. She recounted that while he was repairing the pump, he suddenly experienced breathing difficulties and could not escape due to the toxic gas known as hydrogen sulfide.
Initial reports from officials suggest the cause of death was asphyxiation due to inhaling the gas in the well. After the necessary investigations, the body was handed over to the family for religious rites.
